We created this Alternate Unit to highlight and promote an example of a culturally competent curricula that is critical, participatory, and grounded in the interest of our students. Our goal with this unit is to address & discuss the issue of slavery while avoiding the many microaggressions put forth in the original unit. We also aim to introduce our students to local, non-dominant voices in order to engender a more holistic understanding of the local and global long term effects of slavery.
